With the increased interest in diesel fuels and alternative energy options, a diesel filter manufacturer wanted an in-process solution that could monitor the filter quality and archive the results. The filters had critical measurements that needed to be monitored, but the strain on the coordinate measuring machine was a bottleneck in the manufacturing process.
The manufacturer decided to go with a robot-mounted sensor configuration to inspect every filter produced. The assembly process was complex with multiple operations that could affect filtration performance. As a result, the critical inspection points were monitored closely and if an inspection point fell out of tolerance, an alarm was immediately triggered.
Diesel filter gauging process:
- Diesel filters were positioned in simple fixtures
- Four robots inspected alignment features
- All robots quickly measured individual critical features
- An alarm would be triggered if the inspection point was out of tolerance
- If the filter was in tolerance, the data was stored for further analysis and process control
