A small toy was scanned using a Perceptron 3D Laser Scanning system. The collected data was used to produce a polygonal STL file. The STL file was then used to lay a NURBS grid and output an IGES file.

Reverse Engineer to Design Intent

The restoration of classic automobiles has always been plagued with problems associated with formed sheet metal parts. Corrosion, dents, and scratches are sometimes so severe that the original part cannot be repaired. 3D Laser scanning allows damaged parts to be modeled in the computer. Dents, scratches and corrosion can then be removed in the virtual model yielding a shape true to the original designer’s intent. This final model can then be used to fabricate new dies and parts.

Perfect Replication of Complex Shapes

A Perceptron 3D Laser Scanner was used to scan and extract a character off an iced tea bottle. The collected data was then aligned and output into a triangle file. The final surfaced model can be applied to different products.

Digital Preservation of Artifacts

Using the Perceptron 3D Laser Scanner data was accurately captured to replicate the Liberty Bell. The new "Normandy Liberty Bell" will have the crack digitally "fixed" and will be placed on the Normandy Beaches to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

Historical Reporting Analysis

This part was scanned, then key features including cross sections, holes, planes, cylinders, and the relationships between them were extracted. This data can then be saved and accessed by a database for historical reporting purposes.

Feature Extraction + CAD Deviation Analysis

This control arm was scanned for overall scan cloud to cad deviation. Geometric features were extracted for castor-camber relationships. As an added benefit it was discovered that weld spatter free areas contained some weld spatter (indicated as small red areas to right).
