3D laser scanner technology

A 3D laser scanner optically generates a line of points, repeatedly, until the coordinates of all the scans can be joined together to comprise the three dimensional topography of the scanned object. Perceptron's family of 3D laser scanner can acquire and process more than 458,000 points per second, or over 27 million per minute. This solid-state, non-contact laser method far exceeds the rate of traditional contact or single-point acquisition technology, without compromising accuracy.

The point cloud created by Perceptron's 3D laser scanner is compatible with many third party point cloud handling applications, which are used for reverse engineering, inspection, and other computer aided engineering work. What's more, the ScanWorks® software application, which synchronizes the acquisition of image data, can integrate directly with these applications. This means that the acquisition of the point cloud can be controlled to provide the coordinates in whatever way is most usable for the integrated application. And this means it's easier to learn and use too.

Putting your 3D laser scanner to work

How do most customers use Perceptron's 3D scanner systems? Although there are a variety of ways to take advantage of the capabilities of Perceptron's ScanWorks® systems, there are a few standard applications for which customers have found Perceptron solutions to be particularly useful and effective. For inspection and validation, you can use point cloud data to measure features, shapes, and contours, to note the presence or absence of any assembly parts, and to perform complex GD&T analyses quickly and easily.

The appropriate software application can produce a CAD model that describes the sample part, while reverse engineering software can combine and smooth scan data until the requirements emerge. Similarly, Computer Aided Manufacturing can read scan cloud data and produce machining instructions that will create a duplicate part. Rapid prototyping means you can produce a duplicate of a sample part from a CAD representation of the part.

Perceptron, a trusted source

Perceptron has been in the business for 24 years, and the world's major auto suppliers all use Perceptron 3D technology. But they're not the only customers who partner with Perceptron to create three-dimensional scanning solutions. Perceptron systems have been used in the restoration of classic automobiles, to scan toys into CAD files, and to create a three-dimensional model of a two-dimensional logo. Perceptron scanning data were even used to replicate the Liberty Bell.

What makes Perceptron a trusted source for all of these customers? The answer is two-fold: superior quality products and dedicated, long-term support. The scanning solutions from Perceptron all have a few traits in common. First, they deliver fast and accurate results. Second, they provide flexible solutions to meet different scanning challenges. Third, they provide the benefits of non-contact, for scanning small, delicate, or soft-material parts. Finally, they integrate both with point cloud handling software and with established manufacturing process machinery.

Support starts from your first meeting with a Perceptron ScanWorks® representative. You'll be introduced to the technology and the many options available. Your technical representative will assist you in identifying which options best work to meet your objectives. When your system is delivered Perceptron's' trained experts provide training and assistance as you begin to introduce the technology into your development or manufacturing process. And they're available 24-7 too! From a technical support site on the web to telephone support to personal support, you'll always get the help you need to keep things running smoothly. With quality products and unparalleled service and support, Perceptron has the scanning solutions you're looking for.
